December has learned that a plague is coming. To warn the king’s court, she must travel up the River Violet through a land whose rivers carry demon blood. That journey is the premise of Brandon Sanderson’s The Fires of December, a standalone Cosmere novel read by Michael Kramer.
The English audiobook is already out: Macmillan Audio lists October 6, 2026 as its release date. The December date refers to the general physical release. Dragonsteel’s October 7 announcement confirms that the audiobook and ebook are available ahead of that print release.
Michael Kramer’s English audiobook edition
This is a Macmillan Audio production from Dragonsteel Books, with Michael Kramer credited as the reader. For the same edition, ISBN 9781250505897, Libro.fm lists English, an unabridged recording and a running time of 12 hours 42 minutes.
Hoid is the storyteller within the novel; Kramer is the audiobook performer. Macmillan places the book in Hoid’s Travails and describes those stories as standalones that can be read in any order. There is no required sequence within that group of novels.
Where to find the free official samples
Dragonsteel’s sample-chapter page brings together two ways to try the opening: a free PDF containing chapters 1–8 and audiobook samples on Brandon Sanderson’s YouTube channel. Dragonsteel says the YouTube samples include commentary from the author.
The eight-chapter offer is for the PDF; the page does not promise all eight chapters in audio. Follow the audio samples there to hear the opening before choosing the complete recording. The free material is an excerpt, while the full audiobook is a separate release.
